Who we are

The Friends of Teesside Archives is a society of people who use and support the archives. Our interests include genealogy, archaeology, architecture, social and industrial history, shipping, and many other aspects of our local area. This area, the former County of Cleveland, now consists of Hartlepool, Stockton, Middlesbrough, and Redcar and Cleveland.

Although most of our members are local, some are from other parts of the country, and some are from other countries - as far away as Japan.

We have a regular programme of events, including talks on a wide variety of subjects, workshops, trips to sites of interest, and a Members' Christmas buffet. A quarterly newsletter keeps members informed of developments and forthcoming events.

We have connections to other local organisations, with our committee having representatives from the Cleveland Industrial Archaeology Society, the Cleveland and Teesside Local History Society, and the University of Teesside.

As well as taking part in the social events, many members do voluntary work to assist the Archives in providing the best possible service to the public. The photograph above shows Friends demonstrating the computer facilities to visitors on Archives Open Day. Information on voluntary activities is shown on the 'Volunteering' page.

Fund raising is an important part of our activities. The money is used for a wide range of activies. More details, including how you can help, is given on the Fund raising page.

Some funds have been used to purchase CDs of the national censuses. These are kept in the Friends' Library and are available for use by members.
